Iran Must Be Held Accountable for Continued Support to Syria's Assad, Ros-Lehtinen Says

Iraqi Assistance to Iran Unacceptable

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today commented on reports that Iran is continuing to use Iraqi airspace to supply Syria’s Assad regime.  Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“Reports of Tehran using Iraqi airspace to send fighters and materials to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to continue his brutal assault on the Syrian people are disturbing but not surprising.  Iran’s use of Iraqi airspace is only a small part of Tehran’s expanding influence over Baghdad and yet nothing has been done to address this alarming situation.

“For months, Iraq has been helping Iran skirt U.S. and international sanctions and increased cooperation on a variety of levels. Yet, despite this clear evidence, the Administration has failed to act on this disturbing trend or hold Baghdad accountable.

“Iran’s efforts to recruit collaborators and provide all forms of assistance to the Syrian regime; its pursuit of nuclear and other unconventional weapons capabilities; its state-sponsorship of global Islamist extremists, including in our own Hemisphere, must be stopped.  The measures to punish the Iranian regime and its enablers are in place but still have not been fully enforced. I urge the President and all responsible nations to stop Iran’s continued efforts to spread instability and hold all sanction violators responsible for their actions.”
