Obama Administration's Egypt Policy is a Failure, Ros-Lehtinen Says

Ros-Lehtinen Opposes Administration's Proposed $450 Million Cash Transfer to Egypt

Monday, October 1, 2012

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following statement today after being notified of the Obama Administration’s intention to transfer $450 million in cash assistance to Egypt. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"The Obama Administration’s policy on Egypt has been a failure.  From its lack of support for moderate political voices to its confused response to the downfall of Mubarak and the attack on our embassy in Cairo, the Administration lacks a clear strategy towards Egypt. Now the Obama Administration wants to simply throw money at an Egyptian government that the President cannot even clearly state is an ally of the United States.

"Money will not solve this situation.  The Egyptian government has not gained the trust of the U.S. and the Administration’s response is to cut an unprecedented $450 million check directly to the Muslim Brotherhood-led government in Egypt is problematic.   The Administration’s proposed cash transfers and other multi-million dollar requests for Egypt are also on hold by me and other pertinent Chairmen.

"The Administration has failed to answer basic questions on Egypt and has refused to come before the Committee in an open hearing and explain to the Members and to the American people what are U.S. priorities in Egypt and what is our policy moving forward.

“I reject the Administration’s attempt to double down on its failed Egypt policy at the expense of American taxpayers. "
